Weather & what to pack

July is winter in Mauritius — and that is wonderful news. It is the island’s cool, dry season: warm sunny days, low humidity and very little rain.

  • Daytime a pleasant 23–25°C; evenings cooler at around 17–19°C.
  • Flic-en-Flac sits on the sheltered west coast — the calmest, sunniest side in winter, with gentle seas perfect for swimming.
  • The sea stays a swimmable 22–23°C; the trade winds can make it pleasantly breezy.

Pack: light summer clothes for the day, plus a wrap, shawl or light jacket for breezy evenings. The sun is strong all year — sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.

Currency & money

The local currency is the Mauritian Rupee (MUR, written Rs). Approximate mid-2026 rates: 1 USD ≈ 46 Rs · 1 ZAR ≈ 2.9 Rs (100 Rs ≈ R34) · 1 GBP ≈ 62 Rs · 1 EUR ≈ 54 Rs.

  • Visa & Mastercard are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants and shops.
  • Carry some cash for markets, small vendors, taxis and tips — ATMs are easy to find.
  • Exchange at the airport, banks or your hotel, and tell your bank you’ll be travelling.

Rates shift day to day — treat these as a guide rather than exact figures.

Getting around & Uber

Uber did arrive in Mauritius in 2026, with a local twist: it operates as “Alalila powered by Uber”, only through licensed taxis, and coverage can be patchy — not always reliable at the airport or in quieter areas.

  • Airport transfers: pre-book a private transfer — a driver waits on arrival, the price is fixed, and it’s about 45 minutes to Flic-en-Flac.
  • Hotel and street taxis are plentiful; there are no meters, so agree the fare before you set off.
  • Car hire is great for exploring — Mauritius drives on the left, like South Africa, Zimbabwe and the UK.
Time difference

Mauritius runs on GMT+4 all year (no daylight saving): 2 hours ahead of South Africa & Zimbabwe, 3 ahead of the UK in July, 8 ahead of US Eastern. The shift is small and easy on the body.

In July, sunrise is around 06:45 and sunset near 17:45 — days are a touch shorter and beautifully golden.

Language — and a little Creole

English is the official language, French is widely spoken, and everyday island life happens in Mauritian Creole. You’ll be perfectly understood in English everywhere.

A few Creole phrases to charm the locals: Bonzour — hello · Mersi — thank you · Ki manyer? — how are you? · Korek — all good · Silvouple — please · Mo bien — I’m well.

Culture & food

Mauritius is a beautiful blend of Indian, African, Chinese and French heritage, with Hindu, Christian and Muslim communities celebrating side by side — a famously warm and easygoing island spirit.

  • Food is a highlight: try dholl puri, fresh seafood, fragrant curries and rougaille.
  • Dress is relaxed and resort-casual; cover shoulders and knees when visiting temples, churches or mosques.
  • The pace is gentle — lean into island time.
A few fun facts
  • Mauritius was the only home of the dodo — still the island’s beloved emblem.
  • Mark Twain wrote that Mauritius was made first, and heaven copied from it.
  • Near Le Morne an “underwater waterfall” illusion appears from the air; the mountain itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a moving symbol of freedom.
  • At Chamarel, the Seven Coloured Earths shimmer in seven natural shades.
  • The island is ringed by one of the world’s largest coral reefs — hence those calm turquoise lagoons.
Handy extras
  • Plugs: mainly UK-style three-pin (Type G), 230V — bring a UK or universal adapter.
  • SIM cards: cheap local data from my.t or Emtel, available right at the airport.
  • Tipping: not expected but appreciated — rounding up or 5–10% is lovely.
  • Passports: valid at least 6 months; many nationalities enter visa-free for tourism, but confirm for your own.
  • Water: tap water is generally treated, though many visitors prefer bottled.
